How do you select Make-it-Fly® Advisory Board members to ensure the success of these groups?

We look for the following five criteria in board members:

  • A positive outlook on life, and talents and life/business experience that will benefit fellow board members.

  • An attitude of generosity—willing to share their knowledge and experience to help and support others.

  • A realization that they don’t have all the answers—teachable and willing to take the mask off.

  • A serious commitment to grow their business and a willingness to make whatever changes are necessary. The business isn’t a hobby to them.

  • A commitment to meet with and be accountable to other board members, and to complete the exercises and fill the requirements of the course.

Why do business owners sign up for a Make-it-Fly® Advisory Board?

What happens after the three-month Advisory Board 101 finishes?

We invite Advisory Board 101 graduates who have demonstrated a commitment to grow their companies and maintain a lifestyle of strategic goal setting and accountability to participate in ongoing Alumni Boards.

How long have you been running these Advisory Boards?

We launched our first Advisory Board 101 in April 2003. Since then, we have held 50 boards and graduated more than 600 board members.

Are all board members business start-ups?

No. In fact, we have a wide range of business owners, from start-ups to those who have been in business for 25 years.

How can I be sure my needs will be met in an Advisory Board?

During the three-month Advisory Board 101, you will set three 30-day SMART goals. Those who meet the criteria above invariably graduate with their needs met.

I’d like to talk to some other business owners and hear from them. How/Where can I do that?

Attend one of our Make-it-Fly® Cafés and talk to a variety of Make-it-Fliers. Ask them about their experiences as members of Advisory Boards. Contact us and we’ll also be happy to give you a list of references you may call.

How does Make-it-Fly® differ from business coaching programs?

The affordable price and the community we develop. We create and guide a team of peers who encourage and support each other. Each participant benefits from the expertise and experience of 13 other non-competing business owners.

Many coaches discuss tools and goal setting—strategic goal setting and personal accountability is the foundation and focus of the program within a community rather than a one-on-one coaching session.

Make-it-Fly® Advisory Boards enable business owners to grow to a level where they can appreciate and afford the benefits of one-on-one business coaching.

Does having a board of advisors really help you to make needed changes?

Advisory boards develop into close, caring communities, where members are encouraged and challenged to make the necessary changes and further develop themselves and their businesses.
