A Note From Dave & Victoria

We love this warmer weather. We’ve enjoyed some great ‘city’ hikes as Victoria can now walk several miles. We had fun planting flowers on our patio, which amazingly survived a brief snowstorm last week.

Next month, Dave’s younger son will be married on the beach in Mexico! We’re planning a trip to spend family time—it looks to be quite a large gathering—and catch some much-needed R and R. We hope you are planning to get some rest over the summer even as you grow your business.

In September, we’re planning a day retreat designed especially for entrepreneurs called “The Balancing Act.” We have an outstanding speaker, and looks to be a life- and business-changing day. We’ll give you more details soon.

Our very best regards,

Dave and Victoria

Business Owner in the Spotlight

Tuula Fai
Ascendance

Tuula Fai not only has an unusual name, but an unusual business as well: CranioSacral Therapy, a gentle hands-on technique that focuses on relaxing and rejuvenating the whole body, especially the nervous system. “I help people heal from pain easily, effortlessly and permanently,” Tuula says.

She opened her Denver and Thornton offices in June 2006 after a decade as a marketing director.

Q: What do you find most fulfilling about running your business?
TF: I love to help people recover from injury, illness, and/or psychological stress. When people heal, they grow on many levels—physically, emotionally, mentally, etc. As they grow, I see all aspects of their lives improve—increased energy, greater prosperity and closer relationships. I am privileged to witness these changes.

Q: What motivated you to start this business? What is your background experience in this area?
TF: I had a severe injury in 1992. Nothing I tried seemed to help. My physician finally told me about CranioSacral Therapy. In a matter of months, I fully recovered. After this experience, I began studying and practicing CranioSacral Therapy on friends and colleagues who also healed. Eventually, CranioSacral and Massage Therapy became a full-time career.

Q: What book has been most helpful to you in your business?
TF:
Zero Limits By Joe Vitale and Dr. Hew Lin. In reading this book, I learned that I am 100 percent responsible for whatever I encounter in life. Understanding this has helped me become more focused, effective and loving in every area of my life.

Q: Who has influenced you most in your life?
TF:
I have been most influenced by my fiery redhead of a grandmother (91 years young) and God. Being in relationship with them has taught me how to be more loving and present in each moment.

Q: What has proved to be your most successful marketing strategy?
TF:
I find that referral marketing works best, either through doing good work so people tell others, or actively seeking referrals from business partners.

Q: What have been the greatest challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing, in your business?
TF:
My greatest challenge is wearing too many hats. I prefer to outsource non-core functions so I can stay focused on doing good client work.

Q: How did you benefit/are you benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
TF:
I benefited from Make-it-Fly® in so many ways. The greatest benefit has been being part of the Make-it-Fly® referral network so I can generously give business to others and receive it in turn.

Q: What would you say to other business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly® board?
TF: I just encouraged my colleagues, Alma Sanbern and Ashi, to join. I told them that being part of Make-it-Fly® will give them the clarity, resources and support to achieve their business goals—this or something greater.

Dave Block, Co-Founder of Make-it-FlyDave’s Networking Tip:

Be ready to ask the right questions. When you meet someone for the first time, your goal is to focus on and learn about this person. Find out about their background, their passions, their current needs/challenges, what they did before they became a business owner, etc. Discover what you have in common. Ask questions that will draw out this information, listen attentively, and you’ll never be short of something to say.

Victoria MunroHow to Make the Most of Your Summer
By Victoria Munro

The weather is warm, the days are long—it’s summer. But don’t let those lazy hazy days just drift by. Plan now to make the most of the season: get some needed rest, recharge your batteries, regroup and be ready to hit the ground running this fall.

Three Ways to Maximize Your Summer

One: Socialize and Network
Quality time spent with people in relaxed settings gives opportunity to deepen relationships. Invite current, past and prospective clients to a ball game, backyard barbecue or an outdoor concert.

When the golf course, tennis court or hiking trails beckon, go! Ask two or three clients, who would benefit from meeting and getting to know each other, to join you.

Volunteer to help out in the community, walk or run for a good cause and make new friends in the process.

Throw a party, organize a picnic or plan a luncheon for clients, referral partners and friends. Or host a Raving Fans Event.

Two: Take Advantage of the Slower Season
Depending on your type of business, summer can be slow. Clients, prospects and staff take vacations, people just assume a more relaxed pace, and companies often postpone making purchasing decisions till fall. When unprepared, this can cause a cash flow challenge. Offset this by announcing a summer special, or discount fall services or products if clients pay by June, July or August.

Get caught up on tasks you neglected when busier. Clean out files and purge out-of-date material.

Bring your business plan out of the file drawer and review it. Are revenues and costs projections or track? Do you need to make adjustments? Brainstorm possible new products or marketing ideas, or different ways to grow your business.

Hire a summer intern from a local college to help you catch up or get ahead for the fall.

Make a plan now to finish the year strong. Write goals you want to achieve by the end of the year and put action steps in place for each of them.

Three: Care for Your Business’s Number One Asset

Taking good care of your business’s number one asset—you—is the best thing you can do for yourself, your family, your clients and your business.

Re-arrange your priorities during the summer. If necessary, change your work hours and make time to chill out and have fun with the kids while they’re off school. Get away from the office for a picnic together. Visit the zoo, water park or museum. Organize activities with parents, siblings and friends.

Take mini vacations, whether alone, with family, spouse or significant other. Arrange a day or a long weekend away. Take a camping trip. Watch for last-minute vacation deals and be spontaneous.

When the weather is good, take a few minutes for a brisk walk outside. It will get your brain going and you’ll return to your desk refreshed and more creative.

Maximize vacation time by taking along a couple of light, fun and really motivating business books to read. Bring a journal and jot down your thoughts. Some of the best ideas come at unlikely times when you’re relaxed and having fun.

Take a few minutes each day to review your life and your business from a distance. Write down where you want to be in three years and what it will take to get there.

Before you know it, summer will be a fond and distant memory. Don’t just coast along till business picks up again. Choose one or more of the tips above and decide now how you’ll maximize your summer. Then be ready to enjoy your best fall ever!

Victoria’s Marketing Advice

Proclaim Your Passion
If you love what you do, don’t be afraid to express enthusiasm about it. Sincere passion is contagious. Richard Herrera, of Full Throttle Indoor Kart Racing, asserts, “Nothing speaks to believing in your product and having others believe in you and your product than your enthusiasm and passion for what you do.”
