A Note From Dave & Victoria

We just returned from Mexico, sun-tanned, relaxed and re-energized! Almost 60 friends and family members attended the very special wedding of Dave’s younger son and his bride—on the beach!

Time with family was outstanding. Victoria’s sister, whom she hadn’t seen for over ten years, came from Amsterdam to join us—a neat reunion!

Make-it-Fly Café - High Altitude Networking, where exceptional people help each other

Next week we hold a Make-it-Fly® Café at the new location: The Riverfront, just southwest of Bowles and Santa Fe, in Littleton. Should be a fun event—we look forward to seeing you there!

Our very best regards,

Dave and Victoria

Jon Terry would be the last one to blow his own horn, so we’ll do it for him: he was nominated by peers and named by Real Estate magazine one of the nation’s top 50 “Realtors® on the Rise” for 2007. So what do you do for an encore? You start your own brokerage, Intero Real Estate Services, with a partner in March of 2008.

Jon Terry, Intero Real Estate Services

“We provide comprehensive market knowledge and legal expertise, we take the worry out of buying and selling real estate, and make the entire experience enjoyable,” Jon says. “Intero Real Estate Services is a full-service real estate firm. We serve the needs of buyers, sellers and investors by providing the most comprehensive programs available today. Whether you need to sell your home, buy a home, become an investor or merely need questions answered, we are here to provide you with the help you need. We are adept at working with all kinds of individuals and companies to help them meet their real estate goals and objectives.”

Q: What do you find most fulfilling about running your business?
JT: I love helping people and creating win/win solutions for all involved. Real estate provides an opportunity to do just that. Whether I am helping someone buy or sell commercial or residential real estate, my approach is to educate and guide my clients so that they can make the very best decisions for themselves. I have long believed that knowledge is power and, in order to make great real estate decisions, we need to have a lot of knowledge about the market, the laws that affect a transaction, the needs of the other party and how to negotiate a transaction. I help my clients do all of that, and I find great joy in doing so.

Q: What motivated you to start this business? What is your background experience in this area?
JT: This is my fourth year serving as a real estate broker and my sixteenth year as an attorney. Before moving into real estate, I worked for a large career management firm. I served as the general counsel of that firm and was also responsible for running the Colorado offices. I decided to put myself through an envisioning course offered by the company. Real estate came up over and over again as a field for which I would be very well suited. I followed the suggestion and found out that I had a deep passion for this field of work. I love to come to work and am intrinsically rewarded by helping my clients accomplish their real estate goals and objectives.

Q: What book has been most helpful to you in your business?
JT:
Hands down, A Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. In fact, our entire company philosophy derives from the book. The basic message from this book is: Do the little things that matter each and every day, and the principles of compound interest will take over to help you create the rewards you seek. In other words, your reward comes in proportion to work you do. Take little steps every day, repeat them every day, and you will create big success.

Q: Who has influenced you most in your life?
JT:
It seems I learn from everyone these days and, honestly, I cannot say there is one person who has influenced me the most. I carry great lessons from many people. My mom taught me about unconditional love. My grade school principal taught me to believe in myself – we’re still in touch over 40 years later. One of my fraternity brothers taught me about service to others and the importance of giving back. A Buddhist teacher invited me on a lifelong quest to understand the Divine and our connection to the Divine. A Unitarian pastor got through to me on respecting other people’s beliefs. A mentor taught me that we are all mirrors for each other. To me this means that the greatest lessons in life can be gleaned by learning to see the beauty in everyone and by the willingness to see the flaws in myself and then implement constant course correction.

Q: What has proved to be your most successful marketing strategy?
JT:
My marketing strategy is a little Slight Edge in approach. On a daily basis, I try to exceed my clients’ expectations and they get excited about referring their friends, co-workers and family to me. I set a goal to have each client refer four new clients. I have been successful in achieving this goal. When someone refers a client to me, my goal is to make that person look like a hero for the referral.

Q: What have been the greatest challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing, in your business?
JT:
The real estate industry and the laws affecting it are constantly changing, and the greatest challenge I have is keeping up with those changes. I attend many more hours of continuing education classes than required by the real estate commission so that I may stay current and serve the needs of my clients by doing so.

Q: How did you benefit/are you benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
JT:
Each member of my alumni board has become my trusted advisors. I benefit because each person on my board really knows me and has broad context in helping me solve problems, resolve issues and think through challenges. More than that, I have been helped tremendously by the board members’ skills. I have been through branding sessions, strategic coaching, website development, marketing and advertising plan reviews, and so many other things that have helped me to be more successful. It’s about idea generation, plan creation and implementation, and my alumni board helps me with all those things.

Q: What would you say to other business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly® board?
JT: Just do it! Don’t put it off. You will thank yourself for getting involved.

Victoria MunroSeven Easy Steps to Reach Your Goal this Summer
By Victoria Munro

It’s easy to lose focus and fritter away your summer. We need to relax and have fun, but don’t let the season slip by without achieving what you want. Following the steps below will get you where you want to go.

1. Identify where you want to go. Write down your goal—where you want your business and your personal life to be at the end of summer, or the end of the year. What will you have achieved? How will your business and your life be different?

2. Document what you’ll need to do to get there. Write down the steps you’ll need to take to reach your goal. What will have to happen? What will you need to do? Be very specific. Make note of specific milestones along the path to your goal.

3. Add a timeline to your plan. Be realistic. Allow for unplanned interruptions, especially in the summertime. Build in some flextime, family time and social time. You’ll be more productive if you also plan some time alone time just to relax and think.

4. Prioritize! Each morning, list the tasks you’d like to accomplish, then prioritize them. Decide on the one most important thing to get done that day, even if nothing else got done. Stop occasionally during the day and ask yourself, “Should I really be doing this now?”

5. Work your plan. Arrange to work in time blocks. Experts tell us that we’re more efficient when we concentrate on a task for two-hours, then take a break, walk away from it, relax and do something else for a short time. You’ll return to the task with new energy and focus.

6. Complete one project at a time. You’ll be more effective if you focus on and finish a single task. Multitasking is proven to be stressful and unproductive. Be aware of your weaknesses and prepared to deflect those BSOs—the temptations that easily sabotage your focus.

7. Enjoy the journey! Plan appropriate rewards for yourself at milestones reached along the way. Recognizing and celebrating successes, even small ones, en route to your desination will encourage and spur you on to get there.
