Last week, we spent a couple of days moving furniture—amazing
how much time and energy that takes! The crew from One
Coat Painting painted several rooms in our home. It was certainly
worth all the effort—what a super transformation those new
colors produced! Since Victoria’s office was painted, she
enjoyed a day off and went hiking with her new hips!

We received excellent
feedback on our Fall Day Retreat in September, so we’re
planning another in January, led by Barbara
Brannen. We know your time is precious and
it’s tough to get away for a whole day, but this retreat
will be a great investment—it could change your life
and business. You’ll leave this practical, interactive
and very fun day with a complete
strategic plan for your business and your life in 2009.

Q: What do you find most fulfilling
about running your business?
BE: Connecting people
to what matters so their intentions can become reality. Then they
can be fulfilled, live a life of significance and pass that significance
on to the next generation.
Q: What motivated you to start
this business?
BE: If our nation
is going to survive the next 100 years, we must strengthen our
core unit, the family.
I experienced this powerful gift in 2002 and knew then that I
would have to extend it as a life purpose and calling. I come
from a philanthropic background where I learned how to connect
people to what is important to them. This creates the energy and
motivation for them to make changes in their life, which may be
needed to live their values. People are capable of making enormous
sacrifices (and gifting) when their actions are anchored in their
own values.
Q: What book has been most helpful
to you in your business?
BE: Beating
the Midas Curse by by Perry L. Cochell & Rodney C. Zeeb
and Clients Forever: How Your Clients Can Build Your Business
for You by Doug Carter.
Q: Who has influenced you most
in your life?
BE: My
parents. They believe in me and what I can do for people, community,
our nation and the world.
Q: What has proved to be your most
successful marketing strategy?
BE: Focusing
on the client’s agenda and their revelation, not mine.
Q: What have been the greatest
challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing,
in your business?
BE: Connecting
people to the relevancy of this intangible peace of mind.
Q: How are you benefiting from
participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
BE: Clarity,
focus, connection and the fostering of a real community of people
who desire to be there for each other.
Q: What would you say to other
business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly®
board?
BE:
Do you want more peace, fulfillment,
joy and happiness out of life? Then don’t wait any longer
to do this.

Dave’s
Networking Tip:
When
someone gives you a business card, make
notes on the back if you want to reconnect with this person.
Jot down how you can help him or her, and why you’d
like to have a second meeting. You can do this on the
phone or in person. Then get back in touch with a personal
note or email with 48 hours. |
|
Successful Networking’s Secret Ingredient
By Victoria Munro and Dave Block
Successful businesses are built on relationships because people
want to do business with those they know and trust.
Attending networking events can be an excellent way to meet, get
to know and start building relationships with other business owners.
But, to make the most of your time and money invested, you must
keep your focus the other person
and have an effective follow-up strategy.
Create a Clear Follow-Up
Plan
Instead of randomly collecting lots of business
cards at an event and then allowing them to collect dust in piles
on your desk, employ a consistent follow-up plan. When attending
an event, look for people you’d
like to get to know better. They may be those:
 |
You
feel you really ‘connected’ with |
 |
Who could be
great power partners |
 |
You know you
can help |
When you meet someone like this, ask him or her
for a business card. Then follow up within 48 hours with a personal
note or email to set up a second meeting. This meeting can be
in person or over the phone. People are busy, so be respectful
of their time, and make sure your
focus on the other person and his or her interests rather than
yourself.
That Second Meeting
Is Key
Have a plan for the second meeting. Your goal might
include any of the following:
1. Get to know each other better:
 |
Find some things you
have in common |
 |
Discover their interests, passions,
hobbies |
 |
Ask how long they’ve lived
here and what brought them to the area |
 |
Learn about their family |
 |
Find out how they spend their
non-work time and what kind of books they like to read |
 |
Seek to understand their philosophy
and core values |
2. Questions to ask
about their business or work:
 |
What sort of products
or services do they provide? |
 |
Who is their ideal client? |
 |
Who would make a good power partner
for them? |
 |
Which aspects of the business
do they enjoy the most? |
 |
What is the biggest challenge
they face in the business? |
3. Find out what needs
they have and how you can help them. Perhaps you
could:
 |
Make an introduction |
 |
Share an idea or offer a suggestion |
 |
Give a referral or refer someone
else to them |
 |
Recommend a helpful book or pass
along an article of interest |
The better you know someone and what his or her
needs are, the more likely you’ll be able to offer assistance,
and build trust as someone who genuinely cares.
The Secret Is Simple
Keep the focus on
the other person—it’s all about them,
not you. Pay attention, listen as they talk and make mental notes
on ways you can help. Never
try to sell yourself or your services unless you’re asked.
Relationships are built on trust, so make sure you follow
through on anything you promise.
Keeping in touch with
people and nurturing your relationships is a critical aspect of
effective networking. Take the initiative to stay
in touch. Each email, card or phone call becomes an opportunity
to strengthen the relationship, enhance your visibility and better
position yourself to help others.

Victoria’s
Marketing Advice
Don't Forget to Follow
Up
It's expensive to acquire leads and gain
new customers, yet so often we fail to effectively follow
up on the leads we get. Set up a fool-proof system to
follow up and keep in touch, so no precious lead falls
through the cracks. Make it your goal to develop relationships
and establish trust. Don’t focus on selling your
products and services; instead find out how you can help. |
