We enjoyed long
walks together—Dave is having a hard time keeping up with
Victoria these days—and time with friends, family and grandkids
over Thanksgiving. Though it was far from relaxing, it was tremendous
fun!

Almost x-country ski time! |
Make-it-Fly®
is growing. Next year, we plan to add more Advisory
Boards in the Denver area. Since the two of us are limited in
the number of boards we can run, we’ve been training others
to facilitate boards. We’re in awe of the talent these people
have and are sure they’ll do an outstanding job. We feel
that, in these challenging times, having your own board of advisors
to give you fresh ideas, feedback, support and encouragement can
make all the difference.

Yesterday we celebrated
the graduation of Advisory Board number 60!
Our very best regards,
Dave and Victoria!

| Kent
Lemburg
Soulstice, Ltd.
Kent Lemburg has practiced massage
therapy for 17 years. “In 1995,” Kent
says, “I began seeing Peri-operative Therapy clients from
the referrals of my first collaborative physician. After realizing
the great need for this specialized service, I
launched Soulstice four and a half years ago.”
|
 |
| Soulstice was created to provide for this market
niche service. “Peri-operative Therapy is a high-level massage
therapy that meets the needs of those who are getting ready to
undergo, or have already undergone, a surgical procedure,”
Kent says.
Soulstice also provides general massage therapy services for
those looking for help with specific injuries, repetitive motion
disorders or plain everyday aches and pains. With six therapists
and two locations, Soulstice meets a variety of massage therapy
needs.
Q: What do you find most fulfilling
about running your business?
KL: Now that I’ve
been in business for a few years, my company has many operational
systems in place. It is now, more than ever, a pleasure for me
to continue working ‘on’ the business and not spending
as much time working ‘in’ the business.
When I come to work, there is now a sense of freedom knowing
that our massage therapy technicians are earning the revenue to
meet today’s overhead, allowing me to focus my time and
effort creating growth and additional income for years down the
road.
Q: What motivated you to start
this business?
KL: I love to travel,
and it’s during these gap times of rest and reflection that
magic happens. Four and a half years ago, I went on a trip to
Argentina with my best friend Brad. During our trip, I mentioned
to my small-business consultant friend that I was at a crossroads
with my business. I couldn’t physically or mentally add
any more clients to my already bursting-at-the-seams private practice,
and I had realized a market niche that no one else was filling.
Brad absolutely saw a business waiting to be born, and before
our trip had ended, we had written the business plan, created
the tag line, brainstormed the name and found an inspirational
logo so that my dream could be realized.
Over the years, I had created a certain level of expertise in
my field. I calculated that I had worked with over 400 post-operative
patients and gotten referrals from committed physicians who believed
in the efficacy of my services.
It was time for me to take my experience and to begin teaching
other qualified therapists the methods that I had learned to ultimately
get many more hands on people who need our work.
Q: What book has been most helpful
to you in your business?
KL: Robert
T. Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad's Guide to Investing. It’s
not merely an investment book, but rather a book that promotes
investing in and owning one’s own business.
Q: Who has influenced you most
in your life?
KL: Someone
wise once told me that if you rub up against manure you’re
bound to get it on you! In holding on to that metaphor (I know
that’s a dirty proposition), I have surrounded myself with
amazing, wonderful and successful people. I believe in growth
and learning by association – with hopes of ultimately being
led down a road to great success and fulfillment. My sphere of
influence is the many people that impact my life. Many of them
have come from nothing and have created great and rich lives for
themselves.
Q: What has proved to be your most
successful marketing strategy?
KL: As tough as
it can be to keep forging forward, my goal is to accomplish something
every day that moves me toward my marketing goal. Little by little,
my goals have become reality.
Q: What have been the greatest
challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing,
in your business?
KL: The
massage therapy industry is relatively new. There aren’t
many other business models to compare ourselves to or to model
after. I find that we are learning the business standards right
now.
Q: How are you benefiting from
participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
KL: My
Make-it-Fly® experience continues to
pull me out of my day-to-day business routine to help me see the
forest for the trees.
Q: What would you
say to other business owners who are contemplating getting involved
in a Make-it-Fly® board?
KL: No
matter where you are in the process of building your business,
Make-it-Flyers always have additional insight and perspective
to help make you a better businessperson.
No matter whether or not the board is directly focusing on my
business, I still take the words of wisdom and integrate them
into my business.
Taking advantage of all of the benefits and knowledge that the
Make-it-Fly® program offers could be
a career in itself! If someone walks away from the Make-it-Fly®
program with only absorbing 20 percent of the material, then the
program has been successful.

Dave’s
Networking Tip:
People
want to be admired and valued.
Whenever you engage anyone in conversation, one of your
top priorities should be to sincerely express admiration,
respect and appreciation for that person. There is always
something you can admire. Aim to make her or him feel
valued. |

Ways to Stay Up in a Down Economy
By Victoria Munro
The news is rarely good these days and, as a result, it’s
easy to adopt a negative outlook on business, and even life in
general. It’s certainly tough to remain upbeat when everyday
conversations often center on pessimistic topics and what’s
wrong with the world..
Running a business today is especially challenging. According
to a recent article in CNN Money.com, by Alexander Stein, a practicing
psychoanalyst in New York City, “Running
a small business requires enormous psychological resources in
the best of times. It's even harder to stay focused and positive
while the pundits predict economic Armageddon.”
In times like this, it’s easy for entrepreneurs to freeze
up in fear, but having a plan to deal with it can help.
Below are some tips that others
and I have found useful:
 |
Accept
the fact that you’re afraid. Fear is
natural, and it’s a powerful emotion. Be honest with
yourself about your fears and feelings, without dwelling only
on the negatives. |
 |
Verbalize
or write down how you feel. The simple act
of expressing feelings in this way often puts things in perspective. |
 |
Shift
your focus from what’s wrong with your
business and/or the economy, to what is right with your business
and your life. What we focus on tends to become our reality.
Keep your eye on your big picture—what you
ultimately want to achieve. |
 |
Take
action! Look for and brainstorm possible opportunities
that you may never have thought about, or that may not have
existed before. Consider possible new markets or new products
and/or services that could be in demand now. |
 |
Be
thankful. When you’re tempted to worry,
stop and make a list of what you’re grateful for. |
 |
Prevent
unnecessary worry. Watching the news and listening
to negative conversations can heighten anxiety. Spend little
or no time watching the news, and when people around you talk
about what’s wrong, instead of going with the flow,
turn the topic to something positive. |
 |
Don’t
fly solo! Surround yourself with supportive
people. In the article mentioned above, Stein also writes,
“Business owners may be particularly
susceptible to the corrosive effects of fear and anxiety because
they're professionally more isolated than most, having no
peers or superiors, only employees, clients and competitors.
Especially in high-stress situations, having partners (or
a trusted confidant) can make all the difference.”
Meet and discuss your challenges with wise and positive friends,
start your own mastermind group or join an Advisory
Board. |
