A Note From Dave & Victoria

A week ago, Victoria got her new hip and is now happily ambulating around with a cane. Because she’s not quite up to speed yet, we re-ran the popular article below. Dave is working from home this week, while enjoying his role as caregiver!

Thank you all for your prayers, cards, flowers and kind thoughts expressed. We deeply appreciate your caring support and encouragement. Because several friends mentioned the value of laughter during these recovery days, we’ve been watching funny DVDs loaned to us..

Make-it-Fly® will be five years old next week. On April 24, 2003, we launched our first Advisory Board. Make-it-Fly® has come a long way since then. We’ve learned a lot and made some truly wonderful friends. We’re planning a Special Birthday Celebration at the next Make-it-Fly® Café on Thursday, the 24th. Mark your calendar now and plan to join us!

Our very best regards,

Dave and Victoria

Nanette Randall, Memoirs by Design

Nanette Randall
Memoirs by Design

Everyone has a story (or two) to tell, and Nanette Randall’s passion is helping clients immortalize those stories. “Memoirs by Design finds the storyteller in every person, assisting individuals and couples who want to tell and write stories,” she says.

Started in January 2006, Memoirs by Design specializes in capturing family histories, legacies and real-life tales interview style in a relaxed setting. “Using insightful transcription, writing and editing, we transform these conversational interviews into priceless story recordings, which are in turn transformed into beautifully bound books with memorable photographs,” Nanette says.

But it’s not just people who have stories. Wag a Tale stories offer pet enthusiasts the opportunity to capture beloved “bow wow and meow” biographies, too.

“When you want to give a gift that matters,” Nanette says, “give a story, a book or a memoir of your life!”

Q: What do you find most fulfilling about running your business?
NR: I never dreamed how much I would love doing this work. I spent over two decades of my life supporting corporations in human resource management. While I loved my career, it was not nearly as rewarding as my work is now. I am a ghostwriter, historian and treasure hunter all wrapped into one person. I feel so blessed to hear the real-life tales of my storytellers – people like your mother and father, sister and brother – everyday people who have something to share.

It is an awesome, but never daunting, responsibility to adequately prepare and ask the right questions to get the most information. The memoirs of my storytellers seem to be as interesting to me as they are to their families!

Q: What motivated you to start this business? What is your background experience in this area?
NR: After twenty years in various corporate environments, I needed a change. I had always enjoyed the interviewing, researching and writing aspects of the human resource function. Working as a memoirist is an extension of that work, but it is more fun and rewarding! It requires care, compassion and responsibility, but it is incredibly important! Can you imagine the world without stories? Imagine your family without its own unique story…

Q: What book has been most helpful to you in your business?
NR:
Years ago, I would have said books like Leadership is an Art and The One-Minute Manager series were essential in my developing my skills as a business owner. I can honestly say that these days I read books such as The Referral of a Lifetime, and both fiction and non-fiction memoirs. It helps me to see how others write, giving me a broader and deeper perspective on how I might best find the answers to questions I ask storytellers.

Q: Who has influenced you most in your life?
NR:
My faith and family are cornerstone and touchstone of my foundation. I am the oldest of seven children, married for 30 years, and the mother of three. I am blessed with supportive family and friendships. I believe in divine intervention and live my life with a sense that there are never accidental meetings. This philosophy grounds me and helps me see each day as part of the path and plan God wants me to accept.

Q: What has proved to be your most successful marketing strategy?
NR:
I am a relational businessperson. Making sure that I take advantage of meeting as many people in the community, describing what I do, and being willing to give away an hour to a cause or group in the form of a presentation or fundraiser reaps positive rewards.

Q: What have been the greatest challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing, in your business?
NR:
My challenge is to make the most of every person I greet and meet every day. My work is only done when people walk away from me, knowing that they have been impacted or at the very minimum convinced that their story lies within and it is important! Very quickly thereafter, I have to convince them that waiting is not the solution. What are we waiting for? If individuals want to use another means to write their story, do it, but do something! Knowing that voices are silenced every day through disease, illness or death might be reason enough for some to get working on their story and if not for them, then perhaps for their loved ones.

I would like to see people stop beating themselves up with regret. Life is like a game – you cannot stop until the time is right. We are in it for the duration. There will always be great plays and tragic mistakes. What we learn is the key, and how we share those life lessons with our loved ones, including the stories of those who have gone before us, is the treasure in the stories. When we share, we protect family legacy, thereby insuring our place in history, just like our parents and their parents and our ancestors did before us.

Q: How did you benefit/are you benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
NR:
I benefited so much from the Advisory Board 101. The camaraderie, the sharing, the opportunity to focus on the needs of my business were invaluable. I have stayed in touch with several of the friends made through the Board and feel gratitude toward Dave and Victoria for their encouragement.

Q: What would you say to other business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly® board?
NR: Well, as I stated earlier about the importance of documenting a story, the same applies here: “What are you waiting for?”

Dave Block, Co-Founder of Make-it-FlyDave’s Networking Tip:

When networking—maybe meeting people for the first time—aim to be yourself. Be real! Have a story to tell about yourself that shows you're human and interesting—perhaps a funny, self-deprecating account of how you messed up, or something no one would ever have guessed about you.

Victoria MunroBeware of BSOs!
By Victoria Munro

Are distractions stealing your time and revenue? In our information-laden world we’re barraged daily with a tempting array of possibilities and products—a myriad of Bright Shiny Objects all vying for our time and attention. Those BSOs contending for our interest may be good and worthwhile, but they also divert our focus and decrease productivity. As a small-business owner who must wear many different hats to keep your company going and growing, maintaining focus is vital. Without it, you’re unlikely to turn your goal—your dream—into reality.

Use the list below to spot ways you can minimize distractions, maximize your time, and increase productivity and revenue.

Keys to Keep on Track

Clearly define your ultimate goal and keep it before you.
With your ultimate goal in mind, create a daily ‘to-do’ list, prioritize the tasks and stick to it.
Identify and concentrate on the most important task you should accomplish each day.
Know when your prime time is and maximize it.
Learn to recognize and say “no” to opportunities and requests that take your time and don’t move you forward to where you really want to go.

Limit Interruptions:

·Resolve to check your email and surf the Web only at scheduled times
Close computer applications you aren’t using
Designate phone-free times—break that reactive habit of reaching for it whenever it rings, and let voicemail take over
Shut the office door when working on an important task—leaving it open invites visitors
Keep a notepad handy to jot down ideas etc. when your own thoughts interrupt you

Recognize BSOs for what they are, quickly shut them down and get back to the task at hand. When we’re focused, our productivity increases and we feel good about our accomplishments at the end of each day. Choose and apply one or two of the keys above to increase your focus this week.
