Over the holidays, we enjoyed rich times with friends and family (saw 9 of our 16 grandkids!). We shared stories around the fire, played games, cross-country skied and just relaxed together.

Now, as we move into our eighth year with Make-it-Fly®, there are some exciting plans afoot. Today, more than ever, small business owners need one another’s support. If you’ve ever thought about joining an Advisory Board or would like to return to a board, give Dave a call (720-962-8888) and see if this might be a good fit for you now.
In response to all who’ve enquired, we’ve suspended Make-it-Fly Café events for now. We plan to resume in the summer, when they’ll be hosted at Full Throttle Indoor Kart Racing’s brand new facility. We'll let you know the date as soon as we know it. You won’t want to miss it!
May 2011 be your best year ever!
Warmest regards,
David and Victoria

Joyce Leake
Animal University
Joyce Leake founded Animal University® as a means of sharing animal wisdom with the world. It is an online resource focusing on practicing and teaching Animal Communication. “Its mission,” she says, “is to broaden one’s view of human interpersonal relationships through the lessons learned from our most trusted teachers: our dogs, cats, horses and more.”
The business was founded in 1994 with Animal Communication. Animal University expanded its teaching curriculum in 2010 with its newest addition, the Campus. “Here,” Joyce says, “its faculty of extraordinary authorities, authors, speakers, presenters, clinicians and practitioners are offered an opportunity to package their knowledge into easy-to-access teaching tools and modules to share, on-demand, with AU members and visitors.”
Animal University is a membership site offering exceptional information for free or greatly discounted fees.
Q: What do you find most fulfilling
about running your business?
JL: Sharing in the experience when one realizes that she is not just talking with a dog, or a cat, or a horse. She is communing with another outside the boundaries of her own species. It is life altering, enriching and empowering.
Q: What motivated you to start
this business?
JL: I’ve always been interested in people and animals, what makes their relationship cohesive or otherwise…what makes them tick. My experience in communicating with animals happened on a fluke 16 years ago. When I ‘heard’ an animal for the first time, listened to the wisdom which was presented in a very matter-of-fact way, almost humorously, the need to share it was as many people as I could was an obvious next move. It has resulted in an extraordinary opportunity to reach out to literally millions and take part in making a difference in our world.
Q: What book has been most helpful
to you in your business?
JL: Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. It is the most complete work I have experienced as it empowers the reader to overcome, define, plan and do.
Q: Who has influenced you most
in your life?
JL: I don’t know that there is one person. I am a student of people in general and I feel that the more I am exposed to the brilliance within each, the more I am able to recognize that quality and apply it to my own life where it fits.
Q: What has proved to be your most
successful marketing strategy?
JL: Mapping the components of a detailed plan using a tool such as MindMap. Visually witnessing my business put it into a perspective that I had not ‘seen’ before. It laid before me the infrastructure that was there or missing.
Q: What have been the greatest
challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing,
in your business?
JL: Keeping the focus. In my business, there are so many tributaries that can and do entice a wayward focus…staying on course is imperative.
Q: How did you benefit from participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
JL: I continue to recommend the Make-it-Fly® program as I feel it is an enriching opportunity to be a part of a group of people with a myriad of ideas, experiences, successes and some, not so, to share, support and mentor each other. One mind is never enough. When two or more come together, the flow among all, on a central focus, is empowering.
Q:
What would you say to other business owners who are contemplating
getting involved in a Make-it-Fly® board?
JL: Do it. But do not go into it wishing for or expecting an instant cure to your questions and concerns. Be as prepared as you can to participate and engage with the other members. Know that you are there to ‘do’ and not to procrastinate. Take it seriously. Do your homework and commit to the accountability opportunities. Make-it-Fly® is committed to your success…and you must be so as well. It is an excellent opportunity.

Invest in Your Number One Asset
By Victoria Munro
Entrepreneurs are famous for working
long hours, often sacrificing time with family or time
to take care of themselves. The thrill of getting a
dream business off the ground and growing it into a
profitable enterprise can be addictive. But in the process,
small business owners often fail to take good care of
the business’s number one asset: themselves.
A healthy, rested, energetic you will accomplish more
in less time. If you’re in top shape, you’ll
be better able to take care of your clients and your
business. So resolve this year to take excellent care
of you—your
business’s most valuable resource. What you invest
in yourself will yield a great return.
Ten Easy Self Care Tips:
| 1. |
Commit
to regular exercise. Studies show that exercise
reduces fatigue and benefits your brain as well
as your body. Go for walks in the park, play a game
of racquetball, swim laps or spend a day on the
slopes—whatever works well for you. |
| 2. |
Maintain
a healthy diet. Enjoy balanced, wholesome
meals eaten slowly in a relaxed setting, rather
than while driving in traffic, standing in the kitchen
or sitting hunched over a computer. |
| 3. |
Get
ample rest and sleep. Staying up late will
gain you more work hours, but you’ll suffer
from reduced productivity and be more susceptible
to illness. Stopping work to slow down and unwind
before bedtime can result in quality sleep. |
| 4. |
Plan
time off. Take mini vacations—long
weekends away, days or afternoons off—just
to relax and have fun. Write them on the calendar
now. Carve out “me” time to just be—to
think, journal, play or just daydream. Include time
for spiritual activities too. |
| 5. |
Take
time to nurture the special relationships in your
life. Go out on a date, enjoy a cup of coffee
with a friend, write a note to someone telling him
or her how much you care, call a friend you haven’t
talked to in a while. |
| 6. |
Stay
positive. Take an inventory of your thoughts
and feelings. How’s your self-talk? Is what
you’re telling yourself kind and uplifting? |
| 7. |
Acknowledge
and celebrate your accomplishments and the
good things in your life. Think about and make a
list of everything you are grateful for. |
| 8. |
Let
go of negative feelings and any unforgiveness.
Remember, problems are opportunities in disguise. |
| 9. |
Review
your vision often. Spend some time looking
at where you want to be. Put up a picture of what
it will look like. Review and maybe amend your life
vision. |
| 10. |
Hire
a coach or join an Advisory
Board to get the support, encouragement,
honest feedback and fresh perspectives we all need. |
In addition, find ways
to inject fun and laughter into everyday life.
Resolve to invest wisely in your number one asset this
year, take good care of yourself,
and you’ll be well rewarded with an excellent
return.

Victoria’s
Time / Balance Tip
Live by Design
If you’re going to finish 2011 with a healthy body, sound mind and a profitable business, you need to live by design rather than by default. Be proactive. Take time to discover what’s really important to you, and what you want your business and life to look like in the future. Design your plan accordingly, write and implement long- and short-term goals to achieve it and pay close attention to balance as you go. |

You worked hard on your presentation and afterward several people came up to compliment you on it. You think, “That’s nice, but I didn’t get any business.” If you want to grow your business through public speaking, enroll in the Presentation Dojo.
