A Note From Dave & Victoria

It’s almost here! Our new website will be live this week! We value your input and would love to get feedback from you.

When we meet and talk with people at networking events, social gatherings or just around our neighborhood, we aim to listen to them and find out not only what they do, but what they’re passionate about and what needs they might have. Then we try to think of who else we know who could perhaps help them—who could they benefit from connecting with. We’ve been amazed recently at the fruitful, truly win-win connections people have made, and encourage you to try this. It’s fun to watch what happens when the right people link up!

We invite you to attend the Make-it-Fly Café next week, on Thursday, June 28, 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Seasons Café. Come join us, meet some special people and make great connections!

Our very best regards,

Dave and Victoria

Business Owner in the Spotlight

Jim Moores
Business CELLutions

In the world of telecommunications, it’s easy to get lost. With so many choices out there, it’s hard as a small business owner to know if you’re making the right decision. Started in November, 2004, Business Cellutions was founded by Jim Moores and John Vallot.

Jim Moores & John Vallot of CELLutions
Jim Moores & John Vallot
Business Cellutions partners with businesses to help them make smart choices for their wireless investment. “We have industry experience since 1989 and focus on business customers,” Jim says. “Each carrier has a unique value proposition in terms of coverage, equipment, applications and pricing.” Business Cellutions represents multiple carriers and helps identify the best solution for a business and then provide long-term support to help minimize the amount of time spent on their cellular program.

“Since we receive compensation from the cellular carriers,” Jim says, “we are able to provide our expert knowledge and experience to our customers for free.”

Q: What do you find most fulfilling about running your business?
JM: Nothing more than helping people. Wireless can be very confusing…we really enjoy rolling up our sleeves and solving problems for businesses. Carriers can be very confusing and our goal is to eliminate the confusion and ensure you are with the correct carrier that matches your business needs.

Q: What motivated you to start this business?
JM: We were both working in sales for one of the carriers in director-level jobs and over the years we realized in some cases our competitors could provide a more appropriate solution for their particular situation. This led to the formation of our business…one that identifies the need and then plugs in the appropriate solution.

Q: What book has been most helpful to you in your business?
JM:
There were a number of books that have been influential, but if I had to choose one I would say Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done by Larry Bossidy, Ram Charan and Charles Burck. This book focuses on getting the results by closing the gap between understanding what needs to get done to getting it done. In small business, there are a million distractions, but you have to focus on what’s important.

Q: Who has influenced you most in your life?
JM:
In both our situations, it’s our wives…they have tolerated drastic changes in income, long hours and us not being there as much as we would like to be. They have been extremely supportive, helpful and we couldn’t have made these changes without their understanding and love.

Q: What has proved to be your most successful marketing strategy?
JM:
In the beginning, it was more cold calling on businesses….now it is moving to more networking and word of mouth.

Q: What have been the greatest challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing, in your business?
JM:
The perception that if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Telecom was very popular in early 2000, and as a result there were a lot of sales people out there creating a lot of confusion, slamming businesses and making promises that weren’t delivered upon. So naturally, today folks are apprehensive with change. So our greatest challenge is getting decision makers to open their minds and spend the appropriate amount of time with us on their wireless situation.

Q: How did you benefit/are you benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly® program?
JM:
Make-it-Fly® helped put all the pieces together for a small business owner who might be rusty in some aspects of running a business. The program really gave you an opportunity to define the vision for your company and helped put together a plan to make it happen. Pairing up with accountability partners ensured you stayed on track and devoted the time and energy to focus on the important areas that you need to be successful.

Q: What would you say to other business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly® program?
JM:
If you are ready to take action on your goals and are ready to move your business to the next level….it’s a must to get involved for the next Make-it-Fly® Advisory Board. You build great relationships and walk away with a team of advisors that help you with your business.

Dave Block, Co-Founder of Make-it-FlyDave’s Networking Tip:

One of the best ways to build strong relationships is to give someone a great referral, one you know will meet or exceed his or her expectations. Be very careful whom you refer, since your reputation and credibility are at stake.

Victoria MunroNeed More Hours in Your Day?
There is a solution!

By Victoria Munro

If you want more hours in your day, more days in your week, you’re not alone. This is the biggest complaint we hear from entrepreneurs. There is a solution. Of course, we can and should maximize our time, become more efficient, automate and delegate, but this alone won’t resolve the time deficiency crisis.

As small business owners, we must balance the many aspects of running a business—marketing, sales, keeping up with customer demands, industry trends and the latest technologies, etc.—with family and friends. The fact that we don’t have to answer to anyone else for how we use our time adds to the challenge.

On top of that, we’re constantly barraged with a seemingly endless array of opportunities and new ideas—many of them worthwhile, even valuable. There are more wonderful things to do, to see, to buy—more ways to spend our time, energy and money than resources allow.

You simply can’t do it all. If you’re to accomplish your dream and look back in the future without regret, you must identify what’s truly important to you, clarify your vision, keep a laser-like focus on your goal, avoid tempting distractions along the way and keep on course.

Keys to Help You Stay on Target:

Define what you want your business and your life to look like three years from now. Think big, but be realistic or you’ll add more stress.
Working backwards from there, ask yourself what you’ll need to achieve in the next two years to get there, then what will you need to have in place 12 months from now? Six months from now? Three months from now?
View requests for your time, energy and money through this filter. Say “no” to distractions, busywork and opportunities that won’t move you towards your goal.
Take time out daily, even if it’s five minutes, just to think—focus on your goal, how it will look and feel when you’ve achieved it. Are there better ways to reach it? Hang a picture of it on the wall where you spend the most time.
Prioritize your tasks in light of this. Define daily the one most important task that will move you forward towards your goal.

There really are enough hours in the day—but only if you define what’s important to you. You’ll need to spell out your vision, keep a laser focus and be choosy about how you spend your time. Only then will you begin to get time on your side.
