Finally, it’s here!
Our new
website went live last week! We value your input and would
love to get feedback from you.
Over the past four years, we have led more
than fifty three-month Make-it-Fly®
Advisory Board 101s as well as five ongoing Alumni Boards. We’ve
learned a lot, tested and refined our systems. Now we’re
ready to start training others to lead Advisory Boards
in different locations—to become Make-it-Fly®
Flight Instructors. If you know anyone who might be a
good fit, let us know.
If
you attended the Make-it-Fly®
Café last Thursday,
thank you—we’re glad you could join us! We enjoyed
seeing so many friends, making some new friends and connecting
guests with those who could help them. A special thank you to
those who donated the fabulous door
prizes.
Our very best regards,
Dave and Victoria

Walker
Counterpoint Design
Kathy Walker’s design business was born through the single
mother’s desire to be a stay-at-home mom. In 1991, Kathy
started Counterpoint Design, thanks to her daughter.
|

Kathy Walker with daughter Sarah,
a gifted illustrator |
| “We approach logo design, graphic design, advertising
and website design from a branding perspective,” Kathy says.
“Our question becomes, ‘How
can we help our clients stand out in the marketplace through color,
design, photography and website technology?’”
Q:
What do you find most fulfilling about running your business?
KW: I love seeing the shift that happens in my
clients’ businesses. The sense of pride and excitement when
they see their business being presented to the marketplace in
a solid professional manner is very fulfilling to me.
Q: What motivated you to start
this business?
KW: When I started, I was a single mom and wanted
to be home for my daughter. I had done the advertising agency
thing and wanted my flexibility. I worked for in-house advertising
agencies, managed a design studio for four years, and freelance
art directed for agencies in Denver and Seattle. With 30
years in graphic design, I have experienced the huge
shifts that have happened in my industry. I find it exciting and
challenging.
Q: What book has been most helpful
to you in your business?
KW: The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber.
Q: Who has influenced you most
in your life?
KW: I’m a Christian. The most profound influence
has been God. Secondly would be my love of horses. I’ve
learned more about myself and my interactions with people by working
with my horses. One time I was in a horrible mood and I went out
to see my horses. The two horses took one look at me and turned
their rears toward me. I had to take another look at myself with
that one!
Q: What has proved to be your most
successful marketing strategy?
KW: My marketing strategy that has worked the best is
truly caring about the well-being of others. For instance,
I’m in a Rotary group. When my Rotary Club really got that
I cared about our service projects that I worked hard to promote,
they had no problem referring me to others. It has become a great
network for me.
Q: What have been the greatest
challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing,
in your business?
KW: I believe the challenge in my field is how fast technology
is moving. I cannot become complacent with what I already know.
There is something new tomorrow. It is both the challenge and
the excitement of my business.
Q: How did you benefit/are you
benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly®
program?
KW: Sometimes “Ya don’t know what you got
‘til it’s gone.” I didn’t realize how
much Make-it-Fly® benefited me until
I left the program for a couple of months. When you run a business
day after day and you feel like you are the only one who cares,
there can be seasons where it is overwhelming. My advisory board
members are people I trust and can turn to when I need another
perspective on a difficult situation.
Q: What would you say to other
business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly®
program?
KW: Make-it-Fly® is for those
who are serious about their businesses AND have the ability to
see beyond themselves and care about others.

Dave’s
Networking Tip:
Never
underestimate the value of staying for the full allotted
time at networking events. I’ve
met some of the best prospects during the last 30 minutes.
Because this has happened often, I stay and expect to
make some great connections in those last few minutes. |

Five
Steps to Help You Get What You Want
By Victoria Munro
Like the account of Alice in Alice in Wonderland, many
of us haven’t taken time to clearly define what we want
and where we want to take our lives and businesses.
Walking along, Alice comes to a fork in the road. The Cheshire
Cat is sitting there, and Alice asks him which way she should
go. The cat logically asks Alice where she wants to end up, to
which she replies, “I don’t much care where as long
as it’s somewhere. “Then,” says the Cat, “It
doesn’t matter which way you walk.” This seems absurd,
yet it’s easy for entrepreneurs
to get absorbed in the daily chores of running a business and
become like Alice.
We can learn from a recent survey of people over the age of 95.
They were asked the question, ‘If you were to live your
life over again, what would you do differently?’ Many answers
were given, but the following three were shared by most:
I would reflect
more
I would risk
more
I would do
more things that would live on after me.
Knowing what you want in life and putting plans in place to achieve
it is rewarding and may allow you look back in the future without
regret.
Step 1. Dare to Define Your Dream!
| Create a crystal clear picture
of the end result you want. |
 |
Take time
out to reflect on what you really want in life. |
 |
Focus on your goal.
See it! What will it look like? There’s power in a picture.
Hang a picture of it where you spend the most time. |
 |
Consider the cost.
Make sure you’re willing to pay the price. When you
decide to do something, you’re automatically saying
“no” to other things. |
Step 2. Keep Your Eyes on Your Carrot
| Like the donkey with his carrot
on a stick, focus on moving towards your goal. |
 |
Identify future
rewards and keep them in mind. Think about how you
will feel when you get there. |
 |
Reward yourself along
the way—perhaps a weekend away, a massage,
a walk in the park or your favorite latté when you
reach a milestone along the way. |
 |
Regularly review your
progress. |
Step 3. Avoid Common Pitfalls that Sabotage Success
| Beware of traps that can trip you
up. |
 |
Beware of
Bright Shiny Objects!
In our information-laden world, we’re barraged daily
with a tempting array of possibilities and products—all
vying for our time and attention. |
 |
Learn to separate the
important from the urgent. |
 |
Don’t get bogged
down with busyness—the number one reason why
people fail to move forward in their desired direction. |
 |
Procrastination
presents a challenge. Having a system in place can
help beat this. |
Step 4. Set up a System to Get You There
| Design one that works for you and
set goals to
get you where you want to go. |
 |
Looking at the end
result can be overwhelming, so break your big goal
down into bite-sized pieces. |
 |
Then, start at the end—where
you ultimately want to be in life and in your business. In
light of that, where do you need to be three years from today?
To achieve this, what will you need to have in place in two
years, then one year? Then, break that down further into 30-day
goals. |
 |
Use daily
to-do lists. Keep them short and don’t
beat yourself up if you don’t get everything done. It
helps to circle the ONE thing that’s most important
to get done that day. |
Step 5. Stay the Course
| Things don’t always go the
way you hope they will—life, crises and interruptions
happen; projects take longer than planned. |
 |
Be accountable
to someone else. It’s all too easy to make
excuses when there’s no one to answer to. Ask a friend
to help you. Tell them to accept no excuses. Encourage and
thank them, especially when they have to be tough. |
 |
Be persistent and refuse
to quit if the going gets rough. |
Follow these steps to get what you want and look back with satisfaction
in the future. Start today!
| |
“Whatever
you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius,
power, and magic in it.” |
| |

von Goethe |

Marketing Advice
Keep Filling Your Funnel
The marketing process works like a funnel—connections
and prospects come in at the top and gradually filter
down to become clients at the bottom. Creating a system
to continually keep filling the top of your marketing
funnel will provide a steady stream of new clients and
help to alleviate feast-or-famine cycles.
