We enjoyed a super Make-it-Fly®
Café
last Thursday! Despite the holiday weekend and
a Broncos game, there was a great crowd of business owners eager
to help and learn from each other as well as conducting some serious
business.
This was a perfect event for those
who want to hone their speaking skills and be seen as experts
in their fields. Speech coaches Angela
Libby Jankousky and Karen Susman
gave away fabulous door prizes of speech/presentation coaching
sessions. Our wonderful friend and Make-it-Flyer, the
legendary Joe
Sabah gave away a full tuition to his seminar How to Speak
for Fun and Profit. There were also certificates to favorite
local restaurants.
We’ve been putting the final touches to our Flight
Instructors
Training, when we’ll train others to facilitate winning
Make-it-Fly® Advisory Boards (we start
board number 53 on Friday).
We’ve got a lot going on, but we also make sure to take
time out and enjoy summer together—visiting with friends,
sitting on the patio talking late into the evening and, of course,
hiking (in our hats recently purchased at a local farmers’
market)!
Our very best regards,
Dave and Victoria

Remarkable Associations!
By 1983, Karen Susman had worked for Weight Watchers for ten
years helping people change their health habits when an article
triggered an epiphany. “This article on hospital wellness
programs prompted me to create a proposal to offer stress management
programs for the cardiac rehab outpatient department of St. Joseph
Hospital,” she says. She was selected over a physical therapist,
a psychiatrist and a cardiologist.
|
 |
And thus began Remarkable
Associations!
According to her website, “Karen has helped thousands of
high achievers maximize their performance and the quality of their
lives.” She does this through speaking, training, coaching
and writing on networking, presentation skills and humor for engineers,
corporations, associations, education, medical and government
clients internationally.
Q: What do you find most fulfilling
about running your business?
KS: Having people
apply what they learn from my speaking, training and coaching.
Being able to make a difference in someone’s life in a small
way. One woman in a humor session had just lost her husband. She
thought she’d never laugh again. As a result of her participation
in my session, she knew she would laugh again and often.
Q: What motivated you to start
this business?
KS: The article
on hospital wellness programs. St. Joseph wanted someone who could
connect with cardiac patients so they could make tough habit changes.
I’d never made a proposal before. But I was a quick study
and I’d experienced lots of stress. Seemed like a fit.
Q: What book has been most helpful
to you in your business?
KS: Feel the Fear and
Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. I’ve done everything
by the seat of my pants. I’m often afraid, but I march ahead.
When I help people make presentations and control stage fright,
I assure them that I’m nervous every time I get up to speak.
I just turn the fear into energy.
Q: Who has influenced you most
in your life?
KS: Many people. One special
person is my sister-in-law Patti. She’s extremely positive
and feels her mission on earth is to enjoy life. By doing that,
she spreads joy to others like crazy.
Q: What has proved to be your most
successful marketing strategy?
KS: Working a niche has
been successful. It’s easier to convince people I’m
the speaker/trainer for them if I’ve worked for people like
them in firms like their firm. It’s easier to get referrals,
too. Also, I personalize everything I do.
Q: What have been the greatest
challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing,
in your business?
KS: Having the energy to
do all I need and want to do. I’m currently creating a lot
of products to sell on my web site. These take lots of time and
I need to be marketing and preparing at the same time. Getting
an assistant will certainly be helpful.
Q: How did you benefit/are you
benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly®
program?
KS: Even though I’ve
been in business a long time, I still need lots of help, fresh
ideas and a community of non-competing, bright people to give
me feedback. I’ve learned so much from my Make-it-Fly®
board. My jaw has dropped many times due to the vision, wisdom,
creativity I’ve shared over a cup of coffee. I’ve
focused more, and Make-it-Fly® has forced
me to give up lots of my “Yes, buts.”
Q: What would you say to other
business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly®
program?
KS: I
would and have shared how valuable my experience has been. I'd
also tell people that in order to maximize the Make-it-Fly®
experience, you have to be willing to put in a lot of time meeting
with your accountability partner and other team members, and doing
the homework. If you’re willing to give as well as receive,
sign up lickety-split!

Dave’s
Networking Tip:
When
planning to attend an event for the first time, find
out all you can about it beforehand. Who is hosting it
and why? If there is one, who sets the agenda? Who usually
attends and what are their needs? Having this information
in advance will help you be better prepared and make your
time there more productive. |

Are
You Missing Out on a Valuable Resource?
By Victoria Munro
If you’re like most small business owners, you
might be overlooking an important resource right at your fingertips.
Entrepreneurs, especially those who are passionate about what
they do, often live life on a fast track—after all, there’s
a lot to do and much of it is up to you. It can be tough to take
time out, step back, and reflect on, analyze and learn from recent
events.
In our Make-it-Fly® Alumni Boards,
members start the meeting by sharing their biggest successes,
challenges and how they fared with their 30-day goals during the
previous month. We notice that successes and challenges are often
linked to each other.
Though you likely aren’t looking for more projects to fill
up your days, much can be learned
by stopping on a regular basis to study and learn from the past.
I recommend setting time aside to assess your past month and ask
yourself the questions below.
| My
Biggest Success(es): |
Note:
Looking at this can
be really encouraging!
|
| |
What was the key cause of this success? |
| |
What did I do, or not do, that contributed to this success? |
| |
What new insights did this reveal that could be useful in
the future? |
| |
Can I repeat this success, perhaps in other areas? How? |
| My
Biggest Challenge(s): |
Note: Challenges
could be viewed as ‘failures.’ However, seeing
them as valuable learning tools to be used as stepping stones
to future success is more fitting. In his recent book, The
Slight Edge, author Jeff Olson quotes Thomas J. Watson,
Sr. (founder of IBM) as saying “The formula for success
is quite simple: double your rate of failure.” Olson
then adds, “If you go through life with the philosophy
that ‘failure is not an option’ then you’ll
never have any good opportunities to learn.”
|
| |
What can I do, or avoid doing, in the future
to prevent this from recurring? |
| |
What can I learn from this? |
Profit from
Lessons Learned: |
| |
In light of the above, and with my long-range
goal in mind, what realistic goal will I set for the next
30 days? |
Note: As entrepreneurs
working for ourselves, it’s easy to set goals and then later
rationalize why we didn’t achieve them. Increase your chances
of success by asking someone else to hold you accountable to do
what you’ve committed to do. Tell him or her to take
this seriously and accept no excuses.
Don’t miss out on this simple yet valuable resource! Plan
to take time on a regular basis to
reflect and learn from your past successes and challenges.
